February Birthstone – Amethyst

February Birthstone Amethyst

Happy Birthday to all you February babies! February’s birthstone is the sparkling Amethyst. This popular stone is actually quartz and refers specifically to the purple variety. This lovely gemstone is quite popular because not only is it beautiful it is also quite affordable. Did you know that Amethyst jewelry was once worn because it was believed that it helped you keep a clear head and avoid getting intoxicated. Amethyst was also a gemstone for royalty in the middle ages, and was as valuable as diamonds and rubies.

Amethyst Cleaning and Care:

Because of its hardness, amethyst is great to use in all kinds of jewelry. But you do need to care for it to keep it looking its best. You should keep your amethyst out of direct sunlight and avoid extreme heat. This means no storing it on a window sill or leaving it in your hot car during the summer. This can change the color of your stone and the lovely purple can dull. It is also important to avoid contact with household cleaners and beauty products, like hairspray. This also includes pools and hottubs. Besides the heat the chemicals aren’t the best for your jewelry. You can clean your amethyst jewelry with a soft toothbrush or cloth and a mix of mild dish soap and warm water. Gently scrub around and under the stone to clean off any gunk and you will see a big improvement if you haven’t done this before. If in doubt take it to a professional to get cleaned. Silver does tarnish over time and a professional cleaning can have your piece looking nearly new again.

Abella Blue at the Sundance Harvest Market 2016

Sundance Harvest Festival 2016This photo is from the 2016 Sundance Harvest Market.

Fall has come and certainly caught me off guard, in fact we have already had snow up in the mountains. I think fall is my favorite season. I love fire pits, sweater weather, pumpkin spice, and the bite in the air. Fall is also the calm before the storm so to speak, when I have finished up all my summer markets and I get to catch my breath a little before the holidays put me into overdrive.

2016 Vendor at Sundance Harvest Festival

This year I was able to participate in the Sundance Harvest Market which acted as the finale to my market season. The morning started out at 6am a brisk 35 degrees and it was raining. So you can imagine my excitement level and need for some massive amounts of caffeine. During the drive on the freeway my mood nor the rain improved. Once we made it to Provo Canyon and I started to see fall leaves and a glimpse of Bridal Vail Falls surrounded by bursts of orange and yellow, I could feel the caffeine doing its work and I started to perk up a bit. Finally we made it up to Sundance Resort where the festival was held and I knew instantly that it was going to be a great day despite the rain. I can’t even tell you how beautiful it is up there. It seems a bit surreal to be surrounded by the huge mountain peaks covered in snow and the trees showing their full fall foliage. Once the Harvest Festival got going everyone seemed to forget the little sprinkles of rain and had a great time. The music was fantastic, the backdrop was stunning and the people were so nice. I am definitely headed back next year!

I did make a few special items inspired by the ski resort. This handmade sterling silver snowflake pendant was a hit. I designed the snowflake pendant on the computer and then transferred the design to silver sheet metal. Then I used a jewelers saw to hand cut each snowflake from the silver. The center gemstone certainly adds some sparkle and I have several options. Also you can contact me for custom jewelry options if you don’t find the stone you were hoping for.

Back To School : Etsy Metal Blog Carnival

Welcome to our EtsyMetal monthly Blog Carnival!

Blog Carnival is about a group of our members sharing their experience on a common topic.

Back to school means the beginning of fall, and one of my favorite times of year. (Starbucks Pumpkin Spice season!) I love driving up the canyon and watching the dogs run through the freshly fallen leaves. I was always one of those weird kids who loved going back to school and it is still the same today. I feel like I am always trying to learn new things, and especially recently I am trying to learn how to adjust to this strange new schedule that I have. Not working is a strange feeling for me and I have had a hard time adjusting. I am so thankful for my wonderful customers and being able to work on my art during the day, or I might have gone crazy all ready. Looking for a new job has been hard and the pickins have been slim, but I know that I can always spend some time in the studio. It is strange how the time flies when you are doing something you love.
Happy Fall everyone!
Check out Back to School for the rest of these talented Artistis!

Out of the Studio Aug. 25th – Oct. 7th

Summer is officially gone and fall is here. To celebrate and enjoy the precious few last warm days left I am going to be taking a little bit of time away from the studio to recharge and spend some time with my family and friends.

This means that any orders received during this time will be worked on and shipped on the 10th of Oct. For any special orders there may be additional time needed to finish the piece. Please let me know if you need your order by a specific date so I can be sure that it will make it on time.

I will try to check my email and messages when time allows so please forgive me if I take a little longer to get back to you.

Have a great week and we will see you soon 🙂

Sneak Peek for New Running Jewelry

New running jewelry

I have been working on a secret project and am excited to share a sneak peek with you. I have to admit that I had been dragging my feet on introducing this into my running line because it isn’t a material I have worked with before. But, I finally took the plunge and ordered the supplies. After a few days of anxiously checking my mail box the package finally came on Monday.

I am delighted to begin offering this piece in my running jewelry line and the big reveal is on Friday in the Running Jewelry section of my shop. In the meantime, here is a little peek at what I am working on.

Professional Development – Online Class

It is important to invest into yourself and your education. So this weekend, that is exactly what I am going to do.

I am excited to be a part of the Revere Academy‘s very first webinar. I would really like to take some metalsmithing classes from them at some point as well. This class is called Prepare for Success with Harriete Estel Berman . It is a two day class and covers a lot of different aspects of running an art business. When I first started selling my work I was pretty naive and believed that I would just make some really cool stuff and sell it, but I have come to find out there is A LOT more to it than that, especially if you want your business to grow. Sometimes it is scary to spend money on things like this because you aren’t getting a physical product you can make money from, like supplies. But, I have found the more knowledge I have about how to run a business, the more efficient I become and that equals more time in the studio, which makes me happy and helps me grow my business.

So, how are you investing into yourself this weekend?
